Custom vs Semi-Custom Engagement Rings

Semi-custom and custom are both useful. The best choice depends on how close the existing setting is, how exact the center stone needs to be, and whether the ring’s side view, height, or wedding band fit matters.

Semi-custom is not settling

A semi-custom ring can be excellent when the setting foundation already fits the goal. You might change metal, center stone, prongs, band width, pavé, basket, or a hidden halo.

This path can be efficient because it uses a proven design as the starting point while still making the ring personal.

Full custom earns its place

Full custom is useful when a setting has to be built around an unusual stone, a very specific side profile, a matching band requirement, or a photo that cannot be recreated through simple modifications.

CAD allows the couple to review proportions before production, but it should be used for clarity, not as a way to overcomplicate a simple ring.

The decision test

If you like 80 percent of a setting and the remaining 20 percent can be changed cleanly, semi-custom may be enough. If the ring only works when the architecture changes, full custom is likely better.

Questions couples ask before the first appointment

Is CAD always required?

No. CAD is best when the ring needs a made-to-fit solution or detailed visual approval before production.

Can a semi-custom ring still feel personal?

Yes. The center diamond, proportions, metal, prongs, and band relationship can make a semi-custom ring feel highly personal.

A photo, sketch, or even a rough idea is enough to start. Andrew can usually tell you whether the smartest path is a sourced diamond, a modified setting, a CAD build, or a short call to compare options.
